Back in March I had the opportunity to attend the Radical Self Love workshop taught by Marian Mellen of The Zen Bird hosted at The Teapot on 5th in downtown Phoenix and I’ve been wanting to share it with you guys since! While I was super nervous beforehand, it ended up being one of the best things I’ve taken time to attend. It’s really intimidating going to do something where you know you’ll be talking about things that make you feel vulnerable and maybe a little more open than you’re used to but I’ve never been around a more welcoming and nurturing group of women.
I feel like I’m on a journey… a journey to loving myself. A lot of how I view myself is tied up in how much I weigh and how I look which has been kind of a struggle since having kids and learning to love the mom bod that’s 100% changed since having babies. So for now, I’m really trying to work on focusing on how I make others feel, being a good friend and a good listener. I want to be a good wife, an amazing mother, a nurturer, a lover and a person that people come to when they need a friend. Because thats the things that are really important, right?
There are so many things that you can do to show yourself a little self love… things that aren’t necessarily expensive or huge but things that show you appreciate yourself and your body. For me, I made a point to make a list of the top 5 things that I wanted to start doing for myself because I find it so hard to not run around doing chores or blogging the minute that I have a second alone. I want to go on a road trip and go somewhere new (CHECK! Girls trip to hike here), buy myself flowers just because they make me happy, have tea while sitting outside and reading a book, take a bath instead of rushing through a shower and take 5 minutes to meditate and set my intentions for the day. I’ve checked off a couple of these things but I definitely need to actively think about it or I forget. I spend so much of my time caring and giving to others that sometimes I’ll have days go by where I haven’t done anything for ME and everyone knows (or should know) that the best way to make others happy is to be happy yourself.
This whole luncheon really made me think about the way I speak to myself and the way I should speak to myself. I need to let myself know that I am worthy, I am deserving, I am accepting and I am fulfilled. And to realize that if something makes me feel something other than these things then I need to let it go, its not worth keeping around. What makes your heart beat faster and give your you butterflies? Do more of that! You’re worth it.
P.S. Marian’s next workshop is on Purpose and its being held at Desoto Market in downtown Phoenix on Sunday, May 21st. You can find more info here! Check it out, Marian is one of the kindest, soulful people that you’ll ever meet.
